MinakiLabs is a data assurance and data journalism company. We find saving money, wasted money and making money in public data.
Governments, hospitals, nonprofits and companies publish a great deal about money: what they pay, what they charge, what they spend, and what they have been cited for. Most of it sits in large files that few people ever open. We open them.
Three things we look for
- Saving money. Places where one buyer pays more than another for the same thing.
- Wasted money. Money that goes somewhere it doesn't do what it was meant to.
- Making money. Openings the public record shows, for anyone willing to look.
Why "data assurance"
Before we write anything, we check the record itself: where it came from, whether we may use it, and what its own publisher says about its limits. We use only data anyone can open without an account. Our methodology sets out how.
What to expect here
Each finding becomes an article in this journal. It will name its source and link to it, and it will be about organizations and public bodies, not private people. Every finding is reviewed before it is published. We are starting with five areas:
This post is the first one. Findings follow once they have been checked.
