Nonprofit money

How tax-exempt organizations raise and spend their money.

What we track

  • How tax-exempt organizations raise and spend money: overhead, grants, and dealings with related parties.
  • Organizations that lose their tax-exempt status.
  • Findings are about organizations, not private people.

Where it comes from

  • IRS Form 990 series downloads (source): the annual returns tax-exempt organizations file with the IRS, published as bulk downloads.
  • IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search bulk data (source): the IRS lists of organizations eligible for tax-deductible gifts (Publication 78), automatic revocations of exempt status, and small-organization notices (Form 990-N).

We use only data anyone can open without an account. How we check our sources.

How often it updates

The IRS publishes new Form 990 filings in monthly batches, and says its exempt-organization lists are updated monthly. Our own update schedule for this area is being set.

Findings coming soon. When we publish findings in this area, they'll be in the Journal.
